In the video below, our UTRGV student SWEL (Soil and Water Environmental Lab) team presents a research project titled “Biochar-Geomedia Water Filter for the Colonias, South Texas”. The project reflects the P3 approach: People (disadvantaged community), prosperity (reducing financial burden to the colonias), the planet (beneficial reuse of biomass and geomaterial).

Biochar Poster for expo

1) This poster summarizes current findings on aqueous lead (Pb) removal by feedstocks (avocado seed, Aspen bedding, palm tree) and pyrolysis temperature. 2) Up-to-date biochar characterization efforts are presented. 3) Batch adsorption for Pb and filter experiment using biochar-pumice (Pb breakthrough) are presented.
