Overview

Air agencies, community groups, and other organizations are rapidly installing air sensor networks across the United States and the world. For many, the goal of collecting local air quality information is to create avenues for change and improve human health. The 2025 Air Sensors Workshop aims to (1) discuss the processes, tools, and engagement strategies that enable impact, and (2) highlight success stories and potential practical outcomes utilizing air sensors.

The workshop will be a 3-day hybrid event for both in-person and virtual attendees and presenters. This year’s event will include presentations and panel discussions with various community monitoring and air sensor stakeholders. The event will provide a forum to discuss basic air sensor policies and practices, tools for impact, community engagement, study results, and more.

Who should attend this workshop?

This workshop will focus on the exchange of information about air sensors and community air monitoring. The event is intended for sensor users who are responsible for installing air sensor networks, reviewing data, communicating results, and facilitating outcomes. This likely includes:

  • Community air monitoring stakeholders and organizations.
  • EPA’s Enhanced Air Monitoring for Communities grant recipients.
  • Experts and researchers focused on air sensor networks and other related topics.
  • Air sensor network data managers and data aggregators.
  • State, local, and tribal air agencies. 
  • Consulting agencies who assist stakeholders with air sensor networks. 
  • Air sensor manufacturers.
  • EPA headquarters and Regional Office staff.
  • International air quality agency staff.
  • Educators
  • Students

Preliminary Workshop Agenda

The general workshop agenda includes five sequential sessions in a single meeting room:

Session 1: Case Studies & Practical Results

  • Case studies where air sensor data and other community activities have been leveraged to reduce air pollution and/or exposure
  • Using credible data
  • Community monitoring and air sensor success stories
  • Practical outcomes

Session 2: Tools for Impact

  • Evaluating air sensor and non-regulatory technologies
  • Air sensor collocation studies
  • Air sensor data analysis techniques
  • Quality assurance
  • Building air sensor dashboards
  • Using air sensors in areas of concern

Session 3: Community Engagement

  • Building effective community monitoring teams
  • Designing effective surveys
  • Facilitating community meetings
  • Communicating results with stakeholders
  • Best practices for implementing community monitoring studies
  • Working with environmental justice communities
  • County/state/regional/academic/industry partnerships

Session 4: Communicating Air Sensor Data & Project Results

  • Communicating air quality levels
  • Communicating findings with various stakeholders
  • Sharing air monitoring data
  • Communicating uncertainty
  • Unconventional methods for results sharing

Session 5: Distilling Policy

  • NAAQS Setting/designation/implementation background
  • FRM/FEM certification process and experiences
  • Potential use of nonregulatory data (e.g., exceptional event demonstrations)
  • Fenceline air monitoring regulations
  • State/local regulations (e.g., AB617)

    Registration

    • There are no registration fees associated with attending the workshop.
      • In-person attendees are responsible for their travel, lodging, food, and other associated costs. 
      • The venue anticipates having a streamlined process for purchasing lunch each day of the workshop. 
    • Workshop registration includes access to the workshop proceedings either in-person or virtually.
      • All attendees regardless of attendance type will receive access to Whova, the workshop's hybrid event platform. Whova will provide attendees with access to real-time webinar presentations, question and answer streams, virtual exhibitor booths, chats between attendees, surveys, and more.
    • EPA intends to post recordings of the event after the workshop concludes (within about 3 months).
      • Stakeholders not attending the workshop in real time and those intending to only access the post-workshop recordings need not register.

    EPA kindly requests that you cancel your registration if you can no longer attend in-person or virtually. Registration closes on February 28, 2025, or before if the event reaches capacity.
