2020 Voluntary Hangtag Approvals for Wood-Burning Devices

The voluntary hangtag program for wood-burning devices was designed to provide an incentive to manufacturers to meet Federal 2020 standards ahead of time, therefore accelerating emission reductions and protecting public health sooner than is required. The models are tested by an EPA-approved laboratory, as specified in the 2015 New Source Standards for Residential Wood Heaters, and EPA verifies that the test performance results meet the required levels.

Beginning in 2020 manufacturers of wood heaters and hydronic heaters may apply to the EPA for a cord wood hangtag if they meet the Step 2 emission limits when tested with cord word. Please note that not all EPA certified wood stoves and hydronic heaters meet the eligibility for the 2020 hangtags.
