San Mateo Creek Basin Groundwater Site - Central Study Area

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), with support from the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED), is overseeing a Superfund groundwater remedial investigation and feasibility study (RI/FS) at what is now designated the Central Study Area of the San Mateo Creek Basin Groundwater Site.

The Central Study Area begins near the northern boundary of the Homestake Superfund site and extends northward to the intersection of New Mexico State Highways 605 and 509.  Groundwater in the Central Study Area is known to contain uranium, selenium, and other metals and radionuclides at concentrations above EPA drinking water standards.

The RI/FS is being performed by three potentially responsible parties: the Homestake Mining Company of California (Homestake), United Nuclear Corporation, and Rio Algom Mining, LLC. These parties are collectively referred to as the Working Group.
