EPA’s Portfolio of Human Health Science Assessments

  • Integrated Science Assessments (ISA)

EPA sets National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for six criteria air pollutants, which include nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, ozone and lead. EPA’s ISAs form the scientific foundation for the NAAQS reviews by evaluating and synthesizing the latest science.

  • Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS)

EPA’s IRIS Program identifies and characterizes the health hazards of chemicals found in the environment. Each IRIS assessment can cover a chemical, a group of related chemicals, or a complex mixture.

  • Provisional Peer-Reviewed Toxicity Value (PPRTV)

A PPRTV is a toxicity value primarily derived for use in EPA's Superfund Program. PPRTVs are derived from a review of the relevant scientific literature using EPA methods, sources of data and guidance for value derivation.

EPA researchers develop and apply state-of-the-science research to produce human health science assessments. Human health science assessments are scientific documents that describe the impacts of environmental contaminants on human health. EPA uses human health science assessments to characterize potential risks to human health from environmental contaminants. EPA’s Office of Research and Development’s portfolio of human health science assessments is designed to deliver high quality, scientifically rigorous assessments tailored to meet the needs of a broad range of decision makers.
