Lake Tahoe

  • Lake Tahoe: A National Treasure

Lake Tahoe is one of the world’s largest, deepest, and clearest mountain lakes—22 miles long, 11 miles wide and in a 501-square-mile watershed. The communities surrounding it depend on the protection of its stunning natural beauty and year-round recreational opportunities. The U.S. Forest Service and state agencies manage nearly 85% of the watershed’s land.

EPA’s Pacific Southwest (Region 9) implements and enforces federal environmental laws in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, the Pacific Islands, and 148 Tribal Nations.

Information on the Lake Tahoe watershed including: EPA's protection efforts, water quality issues, effects of climate change, Lake Tahoe Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL), EPA-sponsored projects, and partner agencies.
