Summary

EPA is providing the public an opportunity to comment on the proposed re-issuances of two Class 5X16 permits for Wells S-26 and S-34 to Martin Marietta Magnesia Specialties (“Martin Marietta”), LLC, 1800 Eastlake Road, Manistee, Michigan. Martin Marietta produces from the Filer Sandstone, a natural brine that is rich in calcium chloride and magnesium chloride, extracts the magnesium, and reinjects the spent brine underground for disposal through two existing Class 5X16 spent brine injection wells, S-26 and S-34, located in Manistee and Mason Counties, Michigan, into the Amherstburg and BoisBlanc Formations, a rock formation 2565 feet below the ground surface. The comment period will close at 11:59 pm on February 18, 2025.
