EPA’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program recently funded six research projects for U.S. small businesses to help develop and commercialize innovative recycling technologies. Please join us for this webinar to learn more about these new technologies. 

Each company (listed below) will give a short presentation on the design, application and impact of their technology and discuss progress toward making these innovations available in the marketplace. There will be time for the companies to answer questions about these new technologies.

  • OLIN (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania): Developing an engineered soil product and process that repurposes waste-stream glass into soil suitable for horticultural and green infrastructure projects. This innovation allows cities to cost-effectively repurpose glass waste which can significantly reduce the landfilling of glass and greenhouse emissions. (Business Representative: Rebecca Popowsky)
  • PKS Consulting, Inc. (Anchorage, Alaska): Demonstrating the viability of a mobile plastic ocean waste recycler. This innovation can be deployed in coastal communities to produce recycled plastic lumber products from locally collected plastic ocean waste. (PI: Patrick K. Simpson)
  • Kamilo, Inc. (San Francisco, California): Utilizing blockchain and GIS-based verification to develop a recycling supply chain measurement system. This novel system provides a low-cost, transparent, and trusted technique to measure, track and verify the sustainable management of reusable resources. (Business Representative: Anna-Marie Cook)
  • Zabble Inc. (Walnut Creek, California): Creating a zero-waste campaign management platform utilizing artificial intelligence. The goal of this innovation is to deliver end-to-end analytics with real-time actionable insights to create a zero-waste blueprint for the healthcare industry. (PI: Nikhil Balachandran)
  • Veriflux Corp (Washington, D.C.): Developing a data platform for waste traceability. This innovation increases efficiency throughout the supply chain, identifies and expands opportunities for reuse, and assists federal, state, and local governments in ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. (PI: Dani Charles)
  • CleanRobotics, Inc (Longmont, Colorado): Development of an automated waste sorting system that utilizes robotic sorting, object detection, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to sort recyclables at point of disposal. This innovation can significantly improve education of users and thereby increase rates of successful collection and sortation of recyclables in the US. (Business Representative: Zak Wehman)
