Public Notice: EPA Begins Five-Year Review of Penta Wood Products Site, Town of Daniels, Wisconsin

Summary

The U.S. EPA is conducting the fifth five-year review of the Penta Wood Products Superfund Site in Town of Daniels, Wisconsin. The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up – with waste managed on-site – to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment.  A summary of the cleanup activities and an evaluation of the protectiveness of the implemented cleanup remedies will be included in the five-year review report.

Cleanup at the site began in 1998 when the EPA issued a final Record of Decision to select the remedies for soil and groundwater at the Site. The EPA’s cleanup included:

• installing groundwater extraction wells and a water treatment system
• excavating and moving pentachlorophenol- and arsenic-contaminated soil to an on-site disposal area
• demolishing all building and equipment
• stabilizing arsenic-contaminated soil and placing it under a 7-acre cover
• constructing a fence around the cover area

The five-year review at the Penta Wood Products site gives the public an opportunity to comment about site conditions or concerns.

This is the fifth five-year review of the Penta Wood Products Superfund site. Its completion is expected by June 2025.
