EPA's criminal enforcement program focuses on criminal conduct that threatens people's health and the environment.  It was established in 1982 and granted full law enforcement authority by congress in 1988. We enforce the nations laws by investigating cases, collecting evidence, conducting forensic analyses and providing legal guidance to assist with prosecutions.

Recent Criminal Headlines and Press Releases

  • Get the Latest info on Criminal Enforcement Activities Related to Operation: Disrupt HFCs
  • Manitowoc Company Inc to pay $42.6M for Clean Air Act violations. The December 19, 2024 settlement resolves allegations that the company imported and sold heavy nonroad cranes with diesel engines that were not certified to meet applicable Clean Air Act emission standards, and violated related Clean Air Act regulatory requirements which resulted in the release of excess carcinogenic diesel exhaust containing nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter.
  • Power Performance Enterprises Inc President and Company sentenced on December 18, 2024 to pay $3.1M for Clean Air Act Violations related to tampering with monitoring devices of emissions control systems of diesel trucks.
  • Matthew Thurman/Environmental Resources Inc sentenced on December 10, 2024 to two years in prison and $680,000 fine for illegal wastewater dumping scheme.
  • Royce Gillham pleaded guilty on November 7 for his role in a scheme that generated over $7M in fraudulent renewable fuels credits.
