Air Enforcement Inspections

In April 2022, the EPA and Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy enforcement staff jointly inspected 16 facilities in the Flint area. An investigation at one of the 16 sites remains in progress. Inspection reports and violation notices (if applicable) link from the map below. Settlement negotiations are ongoing for facilities that received violation notices.

Air Quality Information Session

Staff from EPA, EGLE and Flint organizations hosted an Air Quality Learning Session for Flint residents in Flint on April 25, 2023. Information was presented on air quality regulation, including ambient air monitoring, air permitting, air enforcement and the distinct roles of EPA and EGLE. The Flint organizations, which included Environmental Transformation Movement of Flint, Michigan United, and Flint Rising, strongly influenced the format and content for the session. The situation was interactive, with residents posing many questions. Topics were also prioritized for more detailed follow up sessions, including air permitting and monitoring.

Community Learning Series

As follow up from the Air Quality Information Session held in April 2023, EPA worked with EGLE and local Flint partners to provide a webinar focused on air permits. This took place in Dec. 2023. A recording of this webinar can be found at Michigan's Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy website.

Ajax Materials Comment Letter

In Sept. 2021, EPA issued a comment letter on a proposed permit to install and operate an asphalt plant in Genesee County, MI, near the border of Flint. EPA offered a robust set of comments given environmental justice concerns about the facility.

Assistance to Flint Community Schools

Colorful mural with the word Flint in cursive

In May 2022, EPA conducted walkthroughs at three Flint Community Schools to help school staff identify indoor air issues and recommend strategies to improve indoor air quality. The walkthroughs were used as training opportunities for local environmental organizations. EPA continues to provide technical assistance to the Flint schools on indoor air cleaners including contributing materials to a pilot effort to build do it yourself air cleaners for classrooms.

Indoor Air Quality in Homes Presentation

In April 2022, EPA partnered with the Healthy Flint Research Coordinating Center, and presented information about improving indoor air quality in homes to Flint environmental champions and l and Flint.  The presentation includes information about sources of indoor air pollutants like mold, radon, lead, asthma triggers, and carbon monoxide and ways to reduce exposure to these pollutants.    Indoor Air Quality in Homes (pdf) (1.39 MB)

Increasing Access to Radon Testing

ARD staff worked with MI EGLE and Housing and Urban Development to provide radon tests, training, and outreach materials to the City of Flint as part of the City's Lead Safe Homes Program.  Flint has limited data on radon levels in homes, so with this program more homes can be tested.  HUD funding may be available for mitigation of homes with radon levels above the action level of 4 pCi/L .

Presentation on EPA Careers

At the request of United Way of Genesee County, ARD presented to Flint AmeriCorps staff on careers at EPA and how to effectively apply to government jobs.
