Cyprus Amax and Western Nuclear Mines Documents

This section provides documents completed by Cyprus Amax under the Consent Decree. Many of the documents are prepared by Cyprus Amax’s contractor Jacobs Engineering. These documents have been reviewed by EPA and the Navajo Nation Environmental Protection Agency.

  • EPA Fact Sheet: Cyprus Amax and Western Nuclear Mines (pdf) (2.78 MB, November 2020)
    This fact sheet contains information and updates concerning Cyprus Amax Minerals Company (Cyprus) and Western Nuclear Inc. (WNI), two companies owned by Freeport-McMoRan Inc., and the agreement to assess and clean up 94 abandoned uranium mines in 10 chapters. The 94 mines include: 77 former Cyprus and WNI mines, including 10 priority mines, and 17 mines that are near Cyprus mines.
  • Removal Site Evaluation Report: Climax Transfer Station (pdf) (11.58 MB, July 2022)
    The Climax Transfer Station is located in the Shiprock Chapter of the Navajo Nation on Tribal Trust Land approximately 3 miles south of the Shiprock Chapter house. This reports describes the activities and results of investigations to characterize chemical and radiological conditions at the Climax Transfer Station. The primary objective is to provide data required to evaluate the site conditions and to estimate the volume and area of materials impacted by transfer activities.
  • Removal Site Evaluation Report: Cove Mine Sites (pdf) (10.29 MB, October 2022)
    The Cove mine sites are located on Tribal Trust Land in Cove Chapter of the Navajo Nation in Apache County, Arizona. This Removal Site Evaluation Report describes the activities performed and summarizes the results of the investigation conducted to characterize chemical and radiological conditions at the Cove mine sites. The primary objective is to provide the data required to evaluate the site conditions and to estimate the volume and area of mining-impacted materials related to historical mining activities.

    The Firelight Mine Site is located within Oljato Chapter of the Navajo Nation (Figure 1-2). This Remedial Site Evaluation Report describes activities performed and summarizes the results of the investigation conducted to characterize chemical and radiological conditions at the mine site. The primary objective is to provide data required to evaluate the site conditions and to estimate the volume and area of mining-impacted material related to historical mining activities.
  • Removal Site Evaluation Report: Rock Door No. 1 (pdf) (116.98 MB, April 18, 2023)
    The Rock Door mine site is located in the Oljato Chapter of the Navajo Nation, in San Juan County, Utah, on Tribal Trust Land. The mine site is located in southeastern Utah west of the Monument Valley Tribal Park and is located 9 miles southeast of the Oljato Chapter house. This report describes the activities and results of investigations to characterize chemical and radiological conditions at Rock Door No. 1 Mine Site. The primary objective is to provide the data required to evaluate site conditions and to estimate the volume and area of mining-impacted materials related to historical mining activities.
